Inshore vs offshore fishing: which charter to book

Inshore trips fish calm bays and flats close to land; offshore trips run into open water for bigger fish. Here is how they differ in time, cost, boat and fish.

The short answer

Inshore, nearshore and offshore: what changes

The words describe how far from land you fish, which decides the boat, the trip length, the fish and the ride.

Choosing

Which one is right for you?

  • First time, kids, or prone to seasickness: inshore. Short runs, calm water, steady action.
  • You want big fish and can handle a long day: offshore. Ask the captain about the forecast; offshore trips are often moved when seas are rough.
  • Somewhere in between: a nearshore trip gets you out of the bay without the long run offshore.
  • On a budget: a party boat (head boat) sells single spots on a large boat, often for offshore bottom fishing.

Ask before you book

Questions to ask the captain

  • How far will we run, and how long is the ride each way?
  • What is the plan if the weather turns?
  • How many anglers does the price cover, and what is extra?
  • Are licenses, bait and tackle included?
  • Do we keep fish, and is cleaning included?

Questions

Quick answers

Is deep-sea fishing the same as offshore fishing?

Mostly. “Deep sea” usually means an offshore trip over deep water, often bottom fishing on reefs and wrecks or trolling in blue water.

Which is cheaper, inshore or offshore?

Inshore trips usually cost less because they are shorter and burn less fuel. Charter prices by town.
