Fishing Tofino and Ucluelet: what US anglers should know

Licenses and local rules we could confirm from official or operator sources. Rules change – ask when you book.

Saltwater fishing here needs a BC Tidal Waters Sport Fishing license from Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), plus a salmon conservation stamp if you keep salmon. Under-16 licenses are free. Carry the license while fishing.

Non-residents who want to keep halibut in Areas 121, 23 and 123 cannot use an electronic license; they must buy it in person from a license vendor in Canada. Area 23 covers Barkley Sound, including Ucluelet Inlet.

In Area 23 (DFO table updated Oct 2025): chinook 45 cm minimum, barbless hooks, 2 per day; halibut 1 per day, max 102 cm head-on, possession limit 1, annual limit 10.

Tofino offshore trips run to the edge of the continental shelf for albacore tuna (Aug-Sept) and canyon bottomfish; saltwater fly fishing targets coho in Clayoquot Sound.

Near Ucluelet, salmon reports name Wya Point, Little Beach, Red Can and Begg Island; Swale Rock and the harbor entrance in Barkley Sound give shelter in wind; halibut spots include the Barnyard and Outside Light.

Do I need a fishing license at Tofino and Ucluelet?

Yes. A visitor from the US pays C$91.44 a year for a British Columbia license (fresh water; salt water needs a federal license). See the British Columbia license page for every option, and ask the operator whether they sell it.

Do I need a passport?

Canada’s border agency recommends a valid passport for US citizens. Driving back into the US, a passport card, NEXUS card or enhanced driver’s license also works. More in our border notes.
