Fishing in Bahamas: what US anglers should know

What we could confirm from official or operator sources. Ask your captain when you book.

A Bahamas sport fishing permit is needed only by non-Bahamians fishing from a vessel that is not Bahamian-owned; fishing from shore or a dock needs no permit. Ask your charter whether its boat is Bahamian-owned.

Everyone over age 12 needs a licence to fish the flats (bonefish); licences are issued by the Department of Marine Resources in New Providence, and a Bahamian certified guide is required for two or more anglers fishing the flats by vessel.

Outside an approved tournament, all billfish (marlin, sailfish, swordfish) must be released unharmed. There is no catch limit on bonefish, but catch and release is strongly encouraged.

Visitor bag limits apply per vessel: 18 pelagic fish (dolphin, wahoo, kingfish or tuna in any combination), 60 lb or 20 demersal fish such as snapper and grouper (whichever is less), 6 conch, and 10 lobster when in season.

Several Paradise Island charters meet guests at the Margaritaville dock; Hunter Charters adds a $6 per person pickup charge paid at the boat and says most guests tip the crew 15-20%.
